Since his debut in 2017, Khan has been the MVP for the Sunrisers, with batsmen struggling against his quick legbreaks and googlies. They won their first IPL title under him, and if there’s one player fans associate most with the Sunrisers, it’s Warner. Warner is easily the most prolific run scorer for the Sunrisers, topping the 500-run mark in each of his six seasons for them. He also stood in as captain in 2019 when Williamson was injured. He was the leading wicket-taker for the Sunrisers for four successive years, from 2014 till 2017, winning the purple cap in the last two. When Steyn’s form dipped after 2013, Kumar picked up the baton.

In 2013, his 19 wickets from 17 matches at an economy of 5.66 were instrumental in the Sunrisers winning nine games either by defending totals under 150 or after restricting oppositions to that much. Steyn was the lynchpin around whom the Sunrisers emerged as a bowling team. Ahead of the 2021 season, Moody returned to the Sunrisers camp, this time as the director of cricket. In 2020, Trevor Bayliss took over as head coach, and Brad Haddin came in as assistant coach. Muttiah Muralitharan also replaced Waqar Younis as bowling consultant around the same time, and the quartet of head coach Tom Moody, mentor VVS Laxman, Murali and Warner worked like a well-oiled machine over the next few years. The team finished sixth that year, but unlike his predecessors, Warner retained the captaincy on the back of his own strong performances.

The Sunrisers began to shape their own identity in 2015, when David Warner was made captain. While their bowling proved their stronger suit, in general, they struggled to find their best XI. In the first two years, they trialled four captains, Sangakkara, Cameron White, Daren Sammy and Shikhar Dhawan.

Despite inheriting a team (the new owners retained 20 players from the Chargers squad, including Kumar Sangakkara as captain) the Sunrisers took some time to form a stable core.
